Postcard Extension Painting

Here is a fun project to practice mixing paint colors and matching a chosen postcard.

You will need:
  1. Laminated Postcards (large paintings that have been turned into postcards are great--then you can also learn about the artist who painted the original)
  2. Paint (tempera paints are great for kids)
  3. Paint brushes
  4. Paper or some other support
  5. Rubber Cement

Steps
  1. Choose your postcard
  2. Glue your postcard to your support with Rubber Cement
  3. Mix your paints--experiment with different colors to try to get as close as possible to the original
  4. Optional: draw with a pencil what you would like to add before painting
  5. Make your painting look like the original. Make it hard to find the actual postcard :)

Examples:
Can you see the postcard??

Depending on the postcard that the kids choose, you can talk to them about the artist and why they like that particular painting or photograph. You could also talk about the history of the painting and where the artist is from, why they would have create that particular piece of art and maybe do some research on their life and personality.

Here is where you will find more information about how to make certain colors when mixing paint.
